Description

This is my entry for *silverglass19's contest. The theme was to design the parents of her characters, Adelias and Alonso's parents.

I'm not really happy with this one. >_< My horses suck.

Anyway, on to the character profiles!

Aurelia
Mare.
Golden palomino with blue eyes.
Her name is Spanish for "Golden." More on why in the story below.
Her personality is very stand-offish. She seems like she has a stick up her butt to anyone who she doesn't know or trust enough. To those close to her, she is quiet and caring, and is really just there if you're in trouble.

Hilario
Stallion.
Liver chestnut with a flaxen mane/tail and brown eyes.
His name is Spanish/Portuguese for "Joyful."
Hilario is not your typical stallion. He's not strong and proud and graceful, like you'd expect. Actually he's not the strongest, fastest, or the best leader. In fact, he can be described as clumsy. But he's clever, and, as his name says, he keeps an upbeat personality. Has a great sense of humor.

The Story

It was probably because they were so close in age that they got along so well...Aurelia, born barely two days before Hilario, was the last foal from the herd's previous lead stallion. Only days after her mother became pregnant with her, the old white was overthrown by two dun stallions, brothers. Hilario was one of their first foals.

Nevertheless, the two grew up as the best of friends. Their mothers were close, and so a friendship blossomed between the outgoing young colt and the shy filly....

Aurelia's point of view...
We would always play in the meadow by the river. Whether we would watch fish swim by, fascinated by their lithe, alien bodies, or simply frolic and chase one another through the wildflowers, it didn't matter. I just liked being with him. Even though he stumbled and fell down a lot, I didn't mind his klutziness at all, because unlike the other colts in the herd, he was sweet. And kind...but of course, that all came to an end...

Hilario's point of view...
She always called me Rio. I liked it..."River." It reminded me of the meadow we played in as foals. I called her Aurel...I think the liked her nickname as well. I loved playing with Aurel. Unlike the other fillies, she didn't look down her nose at me for being less physically adept than the other colts, or smaller than them. She liked me for me...and I liked her for her. It was devastating when it all got taken away.

Aurelia's point of view...
I'm not sure if it was shortly before or after we became yearlings that Hilario was forced to go...The two dun stallions that led our herd, like tyrants, might I add, felt that the colts were a threat to their power, and so before they were fully grown, they were driven from the group. I can only imagine what it was like for Rio...his own father abandoning him like that. And all I remember is that after he was gone, I changed completely.

Hilario's point of view...
I was quite depressed for a while, after my forceful departure. But then it got better...I joined up with a small band of loner stallions, to my surprise, one of them being the old white that had led the herd before my birth. I wondered how much better things would have been had he still been in charge...

Aurelia's point of view...
By the time I was fully grown, I was a classic beauty, and no one let me forget it. Both the lead stallions were practically begging for my time. I brushed them both off. Maybe I seemed stuck-up. It didn't matter to me. I was in the herd, but I wasn't part of it...
I was five years old, and had never had a foal. Most of the other mares were appalled by me. But it didn't matter. I grew to hate that life, those horses.
I even grew to hate my own name. "Aurelia." "Golden." It seemed to represent the way I was treated...only my appearance mattered. I longed for someone that saw past the pretty golden coat.
And so I did the unthinkable for a herd mare...I left.

Hilario's point of view...
My surprise was indescribable. That misty morning in early August...the band had been traveling farther than it usually did, uncomfortably close to my old range. Could it have been destiny? I woke up in the gray pre-dawn, as pink barely rimmed the sky, and the mountains cast long shadows over the still-sleeping land. I was dreadfully thirsty. And so, trying not to wake my comrades, I set off for the pond we had located several days previously.
I never would have forseen what came next.

Aurelia's point of view...
It was about three days after I departed from the herd that I encountered Rio. It was very early, and I had stopped at a pond to drink. Then, out of the mist, he appeared. I didn't believe my eyes at first. It had been four years since I had seen him, but somehow I knew...

Hilario's point of view...
"Aurel?" I said, hoping beyond hope that it was her.
It was. I can't honestly remember what happened next. My mind became like a whirlwind. All that matters is that now, we're together...

The End

P.s. This is a note to Silverglass. If you choose to use Aurelia and Hilario, I left the story open-ended so that you can have it fit with Addie and Alonso's story. =)
